ESPN's Heather Dinich Puts Tennessee at No. 10 in Her Playoff Projection
Tennessee did not just beat Alabama on Saturday — it played its way into the playoff picture. ESPN's Heather Dinich placed the Volunteers at No. 10 in her updated College Football Playoff predictions following the weekend's games.
The case rests on the defense. First-year coordinator Jim Knowles' unit held Alabama to 201 total yards and just 54 rushing yards, kept the Tide scoreless for three quarters, forced four takeaways and allowed only two conversions in 13 third-down attempts. Tennessee's Oct. 3 home win over Auburn also gained value when the Tigers went to Athens and knocked off Georgia on Saturday. The performance was not flawless — a muffed punt return was the one glaring mistake — but it was close to a complete game in all three phases.
Dinich's projection gives Tennessee a genuine path: the Vols can likely reach the playoff at 10-2 or better, which means they still have one loss to play with. But the margin is thin, and the projection comes with an obvious warning attached.
Lose at South Carolina next week, and Tennessee would likely fall straight back out of the field. The Alabama win cleared the biggest obstacle on the schedule; the next five games will decide whether the Vols still look like a playoff team at the finish.
