Texas star Colin Simmons lands ESPN's midseason defensive Heisman nod
One of the nation's most disruptive defenders collected a midseason honor this week, and Tennessee fans have a small, slightly annoying footnote in his story. On Tuesday, ESPN's Bill Connelly named Texas defensive end Colin Simmons his half-season Defensive Heisman winner.
The production explains the choice. Simmons piled up 16 tackles for loss through his first six games, a pace Connelly measured against Will Anderson Jr., the only power-conference defender to reach 30 tackles for loss in a season. Simmons also slotted fifth on Connelly's Week 7 Heisman list after a dominant outing against Florida — eight tackles, four tackles for loss and a sack.
For Vol fans, the connection is the one the original story leads with: Simmons' season may come to be defined by a celebration against Tennessee. Beyond that moment, this is a national honor with no direct bearing on the Vols' own campaign.
Simmons' immediate future is less certain than his résumé. He suffered a high ankle sprain on Saturday, and Texas was expected to face Ole Miss this weekend without him — a significant absence for the Longhorns' defense, and a reminder of how quickly a Heisman-caliber season can wobble.
